Save Nelson’s Waterfront Park Crown Land!

PRESS RELEASE

We are protecting Nelson’s waterfront park land. We, the people of BC, currently own 3 acres of Crown land on the eastern waterfront of the City of Nelson. We believe this land:

1. should not be sold to a private developer. (We want the Crown land to remain public property and to continue to be zoned as P2 – park and open space.)

2. should be remediated in order to protect the environment.

Recently, FrontCounter BC has accepted an application made by the Nelson Landing Development Corporation Ltd. (applicant: David Sorensen www.nelsonlanding.com ) of Bowen Island, BC, on behalf of the Ministry of Forests, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations ( MFLNRO), Kootenay Region, for a License of Occupation – Leading to a Crown Grant.

Clash: an art SHOW opening

During the SelfDesign High Summer Art Intensive, Raven Truth, Cobi Delfiner, Ella Parker, Sabine Stroich, Cloe Lemay and Sasha Baines have been doing art and beginning to understand more about themselves through their art.

This is a one month program that includes two weeks of instructional workshops in the BackAlley Studio and two weeks of open studio where learners work towards a final show at the Oxygen Art Centre. They have had guidance from the mentors Anita Levesque, Amber Santos, Laurryn and Jessie Demers. During the first two weeks, Oliver Davison, Dylan Humphreys, Jamie Inniss and Maia DH were young artists in residence. They made art in the studio space where the workshops took place, inspiring the learners.

Heritage Tours

St.Saviour’s Anglican Church is building on the success of its inaugural summer public tours launched last year by again throwing open its doors. The Church, located at the corner of Silica and Ward Streets, will again be open during the months of July and August with volunteer tour guides in attendance to answer questions. Alternately, visitors can pick up an informational pamphlet for a self guided tour or just enjoy a quiet contemplative time.St. Saviour’s Pro-Cathedral is a by-law designated Heritage Church built in 1898 and rebuilt in 1929 after a disastrous fire. In addition to carved wood architectural highlights, the Church contains 16 memorial stained glass windows as well as numerous memorial plaques. The stained glass windows are unique and collectively the best example of Church stained glass in the Kootenays and on par with those in Cathedrals in Vancouver and Victoria. Earlier in June, the Church partnered with Touchstone’s Nelson Heritage House Tour, in a special presentation of the history of the memorial stained glass windows. This history has now been blended into the daily tour and in a shortly to be published 32 page full colour guidebook. Also, on August 13 and 14, as part of the Columbia Basin Cultural Tour, the memorial part of that presentation will be reprised. The Church is open for tours, 11 am to 3 pm Monday to Saturday inclusive, during the months of July and August. Tours are free, though donations are accepted and books detailing the church’s history are available. The Church is also open Sundays for regular service at 10:30 am.
