Instructor: Marilyn Thomas
These four day-long workshops for both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal youth will develop individual problem-solving and narrative skills for film while challenging participants to develop a cohesive creative vision. Using cutting-edge video/ digital SLR technology, Aboriginal filmmaker Marilyn Thomas will lead youth through the development of a short (1-3 min.) film for broadcast on the World Anew website, NEW NOW. This website features interviews with established Aboriginal filmmakers as well as film clips and the youth films produced through workshops. Young filmmakers will learn different methods for storytelling on screen, learn basic lighting and set technique, and get a brief rundown in Final Cut Pro Editing techniques. The last step in this process will be to view the work as a group. When all work has been compiled and professionally edited at the end of the tour, youth will have their work ‘broadcast’ through the internet component, allowing them to show their work to family and peers.

CALGARY NOVELIST SUZETTE MAYR LAUNCHES HER LATEST, MONOCEROS, AT NELSON’S OXYGEN ART CENTRE, MONDAY, JULY 25, 7:30 PM
The ripple effect of the suicide of a bullied gay 17-year-old is the focus of Calgary novelist Suzette Mayr’s tragicomic new novel, Monoceros, which she will launch at Nelson’s Oxygen Art Centre, 320 Vernon St. (alley entrance), on Monday, July 25 at 7:30 p.m.
The launch is free and open to the public.
“Monoceros is one of the most imaginative, quirky and emotionally devastating novels I’ve read in a long while,” according to the Globe and Mail’s reviewer last month. “Mayr avoids the sentimental by offering up the supremely real–characters affected by [the high school student's] death, in all their selfish, immature, human ways.” The rave review praises Mayr’s use of multiple narrators to present the suicide’s effect on a range of adults and peers, most connected to the suburban Calgary Catholic high school where the bullying occurs. “Mayr manages to offer compelling detail in convincing teen-speak and in the words of burnt-out teachers just trying to get to the final bell without going mad.”
Mayr is the author of three previous novels, including Venous Hum (2004 ) and The Widows (1998), shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best Book in the Canada-Caribbean region. She is a former president of the Writers Guild of Alberta, and teaches English and creative writing at the University of Calgary.

In this beautiful, educational, and fun slide presentation, Dr. Kallas shows how to identify, harvest and prepare nutritious, delicious, and abundant edible wild plants found within walking distance of your kitchen. This presentation is a sampling of the content of John’s new book: “Edible Wild Plants: Wild Foods From Dirt to Plate“. The presentation will be followed by a question and answer period and a book signing. No registration is required. Admittance is first come first served and limited to the capacity of the venue. Signed copies will be available for sale after the presentation. $25 cash or check. No credit cards please.
Edible Wild Plants is ground-breaking: It’s the first book to make wild foods understandable and usable by the general public—including gardeners, chefs, dieters, home cooks and nutrition-minded consumers. John makes it fun and easy to learn about foods you’ve unknowingly passed by all your life. He gives you the knowledge and confidence to finally begin eating and enjoying these foods.
John Kallas has investigated edible wild plants since 1970 and taught about them since 1978. A trained botanist, nature photographer, writer, researcher, and teacher, Mr. Kallas has a doctorate in Nutrition, a Masters in Education, and majors in Biology and Natural Science. He founded Wild Food Adventures, The Institute for the Study of Edible Wild Plants & Other Foragables in 1993 and was the primary writer and editor of the Wild Food Adventurer newsletter. He published Edible Wild Plants in 2010. For more information about John, his book, or Wild Food Adventures visit wildfoodadventures.com.
