Police catch thief in possession of car and goods

A man kicked out of Shambhala went on a brief crime spree in Nelson last week, stealing a car and then using that vehicle to aid in a break and enter.

Chad Brandon Sulmanis, 21, of Calgary is being held in custody.

At 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 5 Nelson police were called to Lakeside Park in Nelson to investigate the theft of a motor vehicle. The vehicle had been legally parked while the owner was out boating and upon their return they found it gone. A witness had observed the vehicle exit the parking area at a high rate of speed a short time earlier.

Police began their investigation and shortly thereafter received information that the vehicle had been abandoned in a ditch in the 2100 block Svaboda Road.

Nelson Police attended the scene and began to search for the suspect with the help of a witness. The search led police to a residence where they located and arrested the car thief after having just broken into a home and stolen clothing and jewellery.

All stolen items were recovered.

The investigation revealed that the male suspect, acting alone, had earlier in the day been ejected from Shambhala and arrested by the RCMP. He had been released from their custody a mere 25 minutes earlier before committing these reported offences.

Arrested and charged with theft of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property (motor vehicle), break and enter and possession of stolen property (clothing & jewellery) is Chad Brandon Sulmanis, 21,, of Calgary, Alberta. He is presently being held in custody and will appear in Nelson Provincial Court on Tuesday, Aug. 9 for a bail hearing.

The Nelson Police Department would like to thank the witnesses who came forward and provided valuable information and assistance which greatly aided in the arrest of the suspect and recovery of all the stolen property taken.
